Are you in the market for a new toothbrush? We have some great news: choosing the right toothbrush can make a world of difference for your oral health. It’s one of the simplest decisions you can make if you want to take better care of your teeth.
What is the dentist’s recommendation? An electric toothbrush.
Electric toothbrushes come in many models! Although they are more expensive than manual toothbrushes, it’s well worth the investment in our opinion for 3 reasons:
1. They get in the nooks and crannies.
We are creatures of habit, which means that if we miss bits sometimes, we probably miss them all the time. These nooks and crannies at the back of teeth, around the gumline, and at the back of the mouth are where food is the most likely to lodge, and where cavities develop. With an electric toothbrush, you can easily and quickly get at these hard-to-reach places. Since the bristles pulse, it also takes less effort to dislodge any food particles. The brush does it for you!
2. You automatically stop over-brushing.
If you tend to clench your toothbrush and go to town like a carpenter with sandpaper, you’re overbrushing! This can lead to long-term sensitivity and gum recession over time. Most electric tooth models are designed to encourage you to simply guide the brush over the surface of your teeth and in those nooks without having to exert pressure. It’s a super effective way to clean your teeth. Some models even shut off if you press too hard.
3. Your brushing habits instantly improve.
One of the most important habits we teach kids is to brush for two minutes (remember your little hourglass timer?). As adults with busy lives, this good habit can fall by the wayside. Luckily, many electric toothbrushes have timers and shut off after two minutes, making it super easy to ensure you’re thoroughly brushing your whole mouth.
Easy peasy! As always, for more information on what toothbrush your dentist recommends for you, ask during your next appointment.
